General Questions
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are the body’s master cells – the raw materials from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. They have the unique ability to develop into many different cell types and can divide to produce more stem cells. At TJ Stem Cells, we primarily use mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from ethically sourced umbilical cord tissue.
Is stem cell therapy safe?
Yes, stem cell therapy is considered safe when performed by qualified medical professionals using proper protocols. Our treatments use cells that are thoroughly tested for quality and safety. Side effects are typically minimal and may include temporary soreness at the injection site or mild fatigue. Serious complications are rare.
How is stem cell therapy different from traditional treatments?
Traditional treatments often focus on managing symptoms, while stem cell therapy aims to address the root cause by promoting actual tissue regeneration and repair. Rather than masking pain or slowing progression, stem cells work to heal and restore damaged tissues naturally.
Are the results permanent?
Results vary by condition and individual, but many patients experience long-lasting improvements. Some conditions may benefit from periodic booster treatments. Our team will discuss realistic expectations and potential maintenance protocols during your consultation.
Treatment Process
How long does the treatment take?
Most treatments are completed in 1-3 days, depending on your specific protocol. The actual stem cell administration typically takes 1-2 hours. We recommend staying in Tijuana for 2-4 days to allow for pre-treatment evaluation and initial recovery monitoring.
Is the procedure painful?
The treatment is minimally invasive and most patients experience little to no discomfort. For IV infusions, you’ll feel a small needle prick. For targeted injections, we use local anesthesia to ensure comfort. Many patients describe the experience as similar to getting blood drawn.
When will I see results?
Results vary by condition, but many patients notice initial improvements within 2-6 weeks. Full benefits may continue to develop over 3-6 months as stem cells continue their regenerative work. Some patients experience immediate relief, while others see gradual improvement.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on your condition, its severity, and how your body responds. Many patients see significant improvement after a single treatment. Others may benefit from a series of treatments or periodic boosters. Your personalized treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.
Cost & Insurance
How much does stem cell therapy cost?
Treatment costs vary depending on the protocol, number of stem cells used, and specific condition being treated. Prices typically range from $4,000 to $15,000 – significantly less than comparable treatments in the US. We provide detailed cost breakdowns during your consultation.
Does insurance cover stem cell therapy?
Most insurance plans do not currently cover stem cell therapy as it’s considered experimental in many countries. However, we offer flexible payment plans and can provide documentation for HSA/FSA accounts where applicable. Many patients find the cost savings of treatment in Mexico offset any out-of-pocket expenses.
What's included in the treatment cost?
Our treatment packages typically include: medical consultation and evaluation, all stem cell treatments, pre and post-treatment lab work, medications during your stay, and follow-up consultations. Travel, accommodation, and meals are generally not included but we can help coordinate these.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes, we offer flexible payment options including installment plans and work with several medical financing companies. We believe cost should not be a barrier to healing, and our team will work with you to find a solution that fits your budget.
Travel & Logistics
Do I need a passport to visit Tijuana?
Yes, US citizens need a valid passport or passport card to re-enter the United States. If you’re coming from another country, please check visa requirements for Mexico. We can provide a letter of medical travel if needed for visa applications.
Is Tijuana safe?
The medical district of Tijuana where our clinic is located is safe and well-patrolled. We provide door-to-door transportation and our patients stay in reputable hotels in secure areas. Thousands of medical tourists visit Tijuana safely every year.

Where will I stay during treatment?
We have partnerships with several hotels near our clinic ranging from comfortable to luxury accommodations. We can arrange your stay as part of your treatment coordination. Some protocols may also include overnight stays at our clinic’s recovery suites.
Eligibility & Conditions
How do I know if I'm a candidate for stem cell therapy?
The best way to determine eligibility is through our free consultation. Generally, good candidates have a condition that may benefit from tissue regeneration, are in reasonably stable health, and haven’t responded adequately to conventional treatments. Certain conditions and medications may affect eligibility.
What conditions do you treat?
We treat a wide range of conditions including neurological disorders (Parkinson’s, MS, stroke), autoimmune diseases (lupus, Crohn’s, RA), orthopedic issues (arthritis, joint pain), cardiovascular conditions, and more. We also offer anti-aging and wellness protocols. Visit our ‘What We Treat’ page for a comprehensive list.
Are there any conditions you can't treat?
While stem cell therapy shows promise for many conditions, it’s not appropriate for everyone. Active cancer, certain blood disorders, and acute infections may be contraindications. We evaluate each patient individually and will honestly advise if stem cell therapy isn’t right for your situation.
Can I combine stem cell therapy with my current medications?
In most cases, yes. However, some medications may need to be adjusted before or after treatment. During your consultation, we’ll review your complete medication list and work with your existing healthcare providers to ensure safe integration.
